They cost more than a blind, they stay on the window for decades, and there is no easy way to compare one quote against another once the sales visit is over. This guide sets out what you are paying for, what the numbers usually look like, and what separates a shutter that still closes cleanly in ten years from one that does not. ## What makes shutters different from blinds A blind is a covering hung in front of an opening. A shutter is joinery built into it. Every panel is measured to the individual window, the frame is made to sit inside or over the recess, and the hinges, magnets and louvre tilt all have to line up on a window that is rarely perfectly square. That is why the survey matters more than the brochure. The practical difference shows up day to day. Shutters give you privacy at eye level while still letting light over the top, they hold their position without cords or chains, they insulate the glass line in winter, and they wipe clean rather than needing to be taken down and washed. They also stay looking the same. Fabric fades and sags on a sunny window. A painted hardwood louvre does not. ## What shutters actually cost Shutters are priced by the square metre of covered opening, fitted, rather than per window. As a guide: - Full height hardwood shutters: approximately £350 to £450 per sqm fitted - Bay window shutters: typically from £1,200 - Wooden Venetian blinds: from approximately £180 per window - Roman blinds: from approximately £220 per window - Roller blinds: from approximately £95 per window - Perfect Fit blinds: from approximately £120 per windowThe spread within that shutter range comes down to material, louvre size, configuration and the awkwardness of the opening. A standard rectangular bedroom window in a modern house sits at the lower end. A curved bay with a radiator shelf, an angled skylight or a shaped window head sits at the top, because the frame has to be templated rather than simply measured. It is worth being realistic about the cheapest quotes. Where shutters are dramatically underpriced, the saving almost always comes from thinner MDF or plastic panels, wider tolerances at the frame, or a fitter working to a fixed time slot rather than to the window in front of them. ## Materials, and why hardwood is usually the answer Most shutters are made from one of three materials. PVC and polymer shutters are the cheapest and are genuinely useful in wet rooms, but the panels are heavier for their strength, so wide openings need extra mid rails. MDF shutters take paint well and cost less than timber, but they swell if water ever reaches the core and they cannot carry a tall panel without sagging. Hardwood is the material we specify for almost every job. It is light for its strength, so panels can be taller and wider before they need dividing, it holds a hinge without working loose, and it can be repainted years later rather than replaced. On a window you will look at every day for twenty years, the difference in cost is smaller than the difference in finish. ## Choosing the right configuration The style you choose changes both the price and how the room works. - Full height: one panel covering the whole window, the cleanest and most contemporary look - Cafe style: lower half only, privacy from the street with light over the top - Tier on tier: two independent sets of panels, the most flexible option for sash and bay windows - Solid panel: timber rather than louvres, for period rooms where blackout and insulation matter mostLouvre width matters as much as style. Narrower louvres suit small cottage windows and period properties. Wider louvres give a cleaner sightline and more view through, which is why they work well on modern casements and patio doors. We bring samples to the survey so you can hold both up against the actual light in the room rather than choosing from a printed card. ## The survey, the lead time and the fit Every home survey and quotation is free and carries no obligation. We measure each opening, check the reveal for square, look at handles, trickle vents, radiator shelves and window openings, and talk through configuration and colour on site. Most quotes are with you within 24 hours of that visit. Current lead times are approximately 8 to 10 weeks for shutters, 2 to 4 weeks for blinds and around 2 weeks for awnings. Shutters take longer because nothing is made until your measurements exist. Installation itself is usually a few hours for a single room, and one to two days for a whole house or a complex bay. On fitting day the frames go in first, panels are hung and adjusted, and every louvre is checked for even tilt before we leave. Packaging goes with us. They do not need replacing when a fabric dates, they add to how the house presents from the street, and they handle privacy, light and insulation in one piece of joinery.
